October 15 will be here before we know it.
For Medicare agents, September is one of the most important months of the year. Certifications may be completed. Carrier contracts may be ready. Marketing materials may be ordered. You may have attended trainings and learned about the changes coming for 2027. But there is one question every agent should be asking right now: Who are you going to talk to when AEP begins? A successful AEP doesn't start with waiting for the phone to ring on October 15. It starts with building relationships, creating visibility and filling your calendar before AEP ever begins. At Senior Benefits Advisors, we encourage our agents to use September as their pipeline-building month. 1. Start With Your Existing Book of Business Your current clients should be one of your biggest opportunities. Begin reaching out and reconnecting. Check in with them. Make sure their contact information is current and remind them that the Annual Enrollment Period is approaching. You're not just looking for an enrollment opportunity. You're strengthening the relationship. Satisfied clients can also become one of your best sources of referrals. Ask yourself: How many of my current clients have I personally spoken with in the last 60 days? If the answer isn't enough, September is the time to change that. 2. Build Your AEP Appointment List Now Don't wait until October to start looking for appointments. Your September goal should be to create a list of beneficiaries who want to sit down with you during AEP to review their Medicare coverage and available options. Organize your prospects by: - Current clients - Turning 65 prospects - Referral prospects - Community event attendees - Walk-in prospects - Previous leads - People who requested a future follow-up The bigger and better organized your pipeline is going into October, the less time you'll spend searching for business during AEP. 3. Get Out Into the Community Medicare is still a relationship business. Community visibility matters. Educational events, senior communities, churches, libraries, health fairs and other local activities can put you face-to-face with the people you're trying to serve. At SBA, we continue to invest in community events and outreach opportunities because we believe agents grow faster when they become recognized resources within the communities they serve. Don't measure every event solely by how many immediate enrollments it produces. Sometimes the person you meet today becomes your client several weeks—or several months—later. Plant the seeds now. 4. Work Your Turning-65 Market AEP shouldn't cause agents to forget about people aging into Medicare. Turning-65 prospects represent an opportunity throughout the year and should remain part of your September activity. Create a consistent process for identifying, contacting and following up with individuals approaching Medicare eligibility. The agents who build a strong T65 pipeline aren't completely dependent on AEP to have a successful year. That's how you begin building a sustainable Medicare business instead of simply having a good enrollment season. 5. Increase Your Social Media Visibility Your prospects should see you before they need you. September is a great month to increase your presence on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and other platforms where your audience spends time. Your content doesn't always have to sell something. Educate. Answer common Medicare questions. Share photos from community events. Introduce yourself. Talk about why you became a Medicare agent. Explain the importance of reviewing coverage annually. Consistency builds familiarity, and familiarity builds trust. When someone eventually needs Medicare assistance, you want your name to be one of the first names they remember. 6. Ask for Referrals One of the simplest growth strategies is also one of the most overlooked. Ask people for introductions. Your clients, friends, family members and professional contacts probably know someone approaching Medicare eligibility or someone who could benefit from speaking with a licensed Medicare professional. You don't need an aggressive sales pitch. Simply let people know you're growing your Medicare business and would appreciate being introduced to anyone who may need education or assistance. One introduction can lead to another. Over time, that's how a referral-based business is built. 7. Create a Daily Activity Goal AEP can become hectic very quickly. That's why agents need structure. Instead of waking up every morning wondering what you're going to do that day, establish your activity expectations before the season begins. Your daily scorecard might include: - 10 client follow-ups - 10 prospect calls - 5 referral conversations - 2 appointment confirmations - 1 social media post - 1 community or networking touchpoint The exact numbers can vary. What's important is having measurable activity. You cannot completely control how many people enroll with you on a particular day. You can control how many conversations you initiate. Don't Just Be AEP Ready. Be AEP Active. There's a major difference between being certified for AEP and being prepared to produce during AEP. A certification gives you permission to participate. Your pipeline gives you an opportunity to win. Use September to build your calendar, reconnect with clients, generate referrals, increase your community visibility and create as many conversations as possible. When October 15 arrives, the goal shouldn't be to start looking for business. The goal should be to already have people waiting to meet with you. At Senior Benefits Advisors, we're committed to giving agents more than contracts. Through training, community outreach, marketing support, events and business-development opportunities, our goal is to help agents build businesses that can grow well beyond a single enrollment season. AEP 2027 is almost here. The question isn't whether you're ready. The question is: Is your pipeline ready? Ready to Grow With SBA?
